The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Rochester is seeking a qualified and experienced individual to begin as an Assistant Professor of Instruction in Italian in the Fall of 2025. The successful candidate will contribute to our commitment to excellence in language and culture education and demonstrate expertise in Italian instruction at the university level. The candidate is expected to teach all levels of Italian language courses with a teaching load of 3 courses a semester. This is a renewable, non-tenure-track position.

Job Responsibilities:

Teach three courses per semester at various levels of language proficiency as well as content courses according to the Italian program needs in agreement with the Italian program head.

Demonstrate strong commitment to collegiality within the Italian program and the MLC department, on campus, as well as in relation to our liaison in Italy, and to the Italian program at the Eastman School of Music.

Contribute to curriculum development, incorporating innovative and effective teaching methodologies such as theatrical performances, project-based and community-based learning activities, extracurricular initiatives, and faculty-led study abroad initiatives.

Engage in continuous assessment and improvement of course objectives and materials in consultation with Italian program head and other Italian faculty.

Actively participate in departmental meetings, workshops, study abroad promotion, and other academic events.

Provide mentorship and support to students, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Serve on departmental and College committees as necessary in consultation with the Italian program head and department chair.

According to departmental needs and individual qualifications, contribute to required departmental courses in Comparative Literature.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Italian or a related field is required; a doctorate is preferred.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Italian and English
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in teaching Italian at the college level.
  • Proficiency in teaching all levels of Italian courses at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience in curriculum development and use of technology in language instruction.

Salary range: $52,000-$70,000. The referenced pay range represents the full base range of pay for this job. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
