Position Overview:

The Department of Religion and Classics at the University of Rochester invites applications for a teaching position in Modern Hebrew language at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor (Teaching Track). The anticipated start for this position is July 1, 2025. Candidates should be prepared to teach upon start of classes on August 25. Permission to work in the U.S. at the time of application is preferred but not required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach six (6) courses per academic year covering the current sequential course offerings from elementary (HBRW 101-102) through intermediate levels (HBRW 103-104), and advanced courses. Classes typically meet three times a week (for 50 minutes) or twice (for 75 minutes), plus weekly recitation/conversation sessions. They will work from an established curriculum in Modern Hebrew, but with some flexibility in designing instructional activities, assessment tools, and potentially expanding the range of language course offerings. They will post and keep office hours to be available to students outside of class.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Master’s degree (or equivalent international degree) in Hebrew Language, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Hebrew Literature, or equivalent in a related field. Demonstrated experience in teaching Hebrew as a second language, and ability to use media and technology in the classroom. Native or near-native fluency in Modern Hebrew and in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD (or equivalent international degree) in Hebrew Language, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Hebrew Literature, or equivalent in a related field. College level teaching experience in the U.S. Familiarity with college-level language programs, and relevant teaching experience using current language-teaching methodologies.
