Position Description

The German Department of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2025.

The area of specialty is open. The Department seeks a colleague who can contribute to our undergraduate German Studies curriculum through a broad selection of German language, literature, and culture courses, and whose areas of expertise will complement existing departmental and university-wide strengths. We especially welcome scholars with interdisciplinary interests that include but are not limited to: questions of race/ethnicity, gender and sexuality, migration, environmental humanities, and visual studies.

We encourage applications from candidates who are collaborative, see teaching as a mission, and are committed to mentoring students, supporting our cultural events program and study abroad, while carrying on a program of research and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level. Candidates should be able and eager to teach at all levels of the curriculum, including elementary to advanced language courses and seminars on literature, thought, and culture, as well as courses focused on developing career-oriented intercultural competencies for post-graduate work, study, and fellowships in German-speaking countries. The typical teaching load is of 5 courses over a 3-term academic year.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have the following: a PhD in German in hand by the start of employment, native or near-native proficiency in German, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and tangible evidence of scholarly promise.

•    An article-length writing sample (max. 25 pages)
•   Titles and descriptions of 2 courses, which the candidate has taught: ideally on more than one level:  intermediate or advanced. (max. 150 words per course)
