Assistant Professor - Medieval Literature

The Department of English at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in medieval literature. Applicants should demonstrate research and teaching expertise in the works of Geoffrey Chaucer and a broad range of non-Chaucerian Middle English texts, Arthurian texts, continental medieval literatures and knowledge of languages most relevant to the study of English medieval literature in its European context: Latin, Old French, German. The successful candidate will have a strong, developing research profile, with an established publication record; they will also have evidence of effective teaching, with possible nods to classes with community-based research, digital platforms, or innovative pedagogical designs.

At the undergraduate level, we offer a concentration in Applied Linguistics and a soon-to-be-approved minor in Writing Studies. Complete applications should include the following items: letter of application; current curriculum vitae; dissertation or book abstract; one scholarly writing sample of no more than twenty (20) pages (a dissertation chapter, for example, or an article); evidence of effective teaching (a summary of teaching evaluations, sample syllabi, and/or a teaching philosophy); and a copy of graduate transcripts. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2019, and continue until position is filled.
