Position Announcement
Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor rank to begin August 2025. We seek a broadly trained faculty member with teaching and research expertise in Spanish/Hispanic studies. This position is a continuing, tenure-track, 9-month appointment that has an anticipated start date of August 16, 2025. Tenure will be housed in the School of Languages & Linguistics.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will contribute to the Spanish program at the BA level. This position involves teaching at the undergraduate level, maintaining an active independent research agenda appropriate to the discipline, mentoring of students, and engaging in service activities appropriate to academic rank. A typical teaching load for untenured faculty in the department is two courses per semester.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Spanish, Hispanic Studies, or related field. ABD applicants will be considered if all requirements for the PhD will be completed by August 15, 2025. If all requirements for the doctoral degree are not completed by August 15, 2025, a term, non-tenure track appointment may be offered in accordance with University policy (http://policies.siu.edu/personnel_policies/chapter2/ch2-faps/conting.php).
- Specialization in Latin American and/or Latinx literature and culture.
- Native or near-native proficiency in English and Spanish.
- Evidence of excellence in university-level teaching
- Evidence of an active research agenda.
Preferred qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability for peer-reviewed research.
- Additional expertise in such areas as Afro-Hispanic, Indigenous, and/or Caribbean literature and culture, Spanish for Heritage Speakers, AI/Digital Humanities, Spanish for Special Purposes, International studies, or Translation.
- Experience and/or interest in supervising Spanish graduate teaching assistants.
