Job Description:
The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Binghamton University seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Spanish Pedagogy. Scholarship should focus on second language acquisition. Further specialization or interest in heritage language studies or language assessment is desirable. This position includes coordination of elementary and intermediate courses within the Spanish Division of the Department. Candidates with experience leading language programs or running professional development opportunities and pedagogical training for language faculty are particularly encouraged to apply for this position.
The selected candidate must have a strong, proven record of excellence in language teaching at the university level, with a strong preference for experience in leadership and teamwork. Tenure-track faculty teach four courses per academic year. Serving as coordinator includes one course release per academic year. The selected candidate should be prepared to teach Spanish courses at all levels of the curriculum, based on departmental need as well as area of expertise.
Specific tasks for the role of coordinator include curricular development (preparation of course syllabi and calendars across all elementary and intermediate sections), assessment of teaching materials and resources, professional training and evaluation (through pedagogical workshops and class observations), as well as advising students regarding placement within introductory and intermediate courses. The selected candidate will work closely with the Department's Chair and Undergraduate Director, as well as the Romance Language Advisor.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work closely with faculty, students, and staff. The selected candidate should actively contribute to the University's mission of advancing a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion through continued work and engagement with faculty, students, and staff. Commitment to this mission should be evident throughout one's submitted materials.
Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Spanish or an applicable field within Education or Linguistics by August 18, 2025. Given teaching responsibilities within the Spanish division of the Department, applicants must have native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.
