Rice University’s Department of Modern and Classical Literatures and Cultures seeks to hire a tenure track assistant professor of German Studies with open field specialization to begin July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will have additional secondary expertise in at least one of the following areas: sexuality and gender, multiculturalism, German-language literatures since 1800, media studies, environmental studies, or medical humanities. Native or near-native proficiency in German is essential. Commitment to program building and strong organizational skills are a plus. Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. in German Studies or a related field by July 1, 2025. Successful applicants must have a demonstrated track record of commitment to effective and inclusive teaching. In addition to maintaining an active research agenda, the successful candidate will teach four courses (2/2) in a normal academic year. Applicants must be committed to superior undergraduate teaching but opportunities for advising and teaching Ph.D. students in other humanities disciplines exist. Additionally, opportunities for interdisciplinary research and innovative teaching are plentiful and a high priority.
