Position Description:

The Department of Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for an assistant professor of Second Language Acquisition/ Hispanic Linguistics to begin September 1, 2025.

About the College:

Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of 15 departments and one program, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. The College has approximately 10,000 students enrolled representing more than a quarter of the overall Texas Tech University student population while maintaining a 22:1 student to faculty ratio.

 

About the Department/School/Area:

The Spanish & Portuguese Program is committed to the studies of languages, literatures and cultures of the Spanish and Luso-Brazilian speaking world. Our dynamic and internationally recognized faculty are experts in the fields of early modern, modern, contemporary Latin American and Iberian literatures and cultures, Border and Latinx studies, foreign language and heritage instruction, second language acquisition, multiliteracies and technology, raciolinguistics, sociolinguistics and Hispanic linguistics. Moreover, the Spanish & Portuguese Program offers service and outreach to our larger CMLL department, TTU and the Lubbock and West Texas community. 

CMLL consists of a dynamic and diverse community from the fields of American Sign Language, Applied Linguistics, Arabic, Classics (which includes Archaeology, Greek, and Latin), English as a Second Language, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Must hold a PhD in second language acquisition or Hispanic linguistics.
  2. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.
  3. Specialty in language technology (e.g., artificial intelligence), instructional second or heritage language acquisition, or languages in contact.
  4. Evidence of scholarly achievement or potential as demonstrated by top-tier, innovative publications and/or works in progress.
  5. Exhibit a record of teaching excellence, demonstrated via teaching evaluations and peer or supervisor teaching observations.
  6. Commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels as both a specialist and a generalist as addressed in cover letter.
  7. Demonstrate the capacity and/or specific plans to attract externally sponsored research, as shown in CV or as addressed in cover letter.
  8. Demonstrate a dedication to service, engagement, and outreach, as shown in CV or addressed in cover letter.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Ability to teach medical Spanish
  2. Ability to teach translation.
