The Department of English at Baylor University seeks an experienced leader and outstanding scholar to serve as Department Chair beginning August 2025. Appointment will be at the Associate Professor (advanced) or Professor level, with tenure. The Department of English is a thriving, productive department with 38 full-time faculty and 3 post-docs, serving over 250 undergraduate majors and minors, nearly 6,000 undergraduate students through the Arts & Sciences Core Curriculum, and more than 30 graduate students.
The Department of English is a strong and collaborative department comprising three programs: Literature/Creative Writing; Professional Writing and Rhetoric; and Linguistics. The Chair will be committed to continuing success in undergraduate and graduate teaching, maintaining high levels of productivity in research and granting commensurate with an R1 institution, and fostering academic service to the department, college, and university.
We welcome applicants with research interests in any field aligned with the English Department’s three programs. The successful candidate should be able to develop, articulate, and implement a clear strategic path for advancing research, granting, and teaching goals in the Department of English, particularly within the context of Baylor’s established R1 status.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a terminal degree in English Literature, Rhetoric and Composition/Writing Studies, or Linguistics. The successful candidate will have:
(1) demonstrated experience in academic administration and strategic planning, broadly defined;
(2) research accomplishments and a professional reputation consistent with those required for an appointment as a tenured Associate or Full Professor at an R1 institution;
(3) experience and success as a classroom instructor and mentor;
(4) the ability to develop, articulate, and implement a strategic vision for further advancing the research and teaching programs in the Department.
