Mellon Assistant Professor of Spanish

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese invites applications for a Mellon Assistant Professor of Spanish, specializing in Latinx Cultural Studies, beginning August 2025. This is a non-renewable, 3-year term position.

The primary responsibilities include teaching courses in Spanish at all levels (2-2 teaching load), along with upper-division cultural or literary courses within the candidate’s area of specialization, as well as courses in the first-year CORE sequence in the College of Arts and Science. The area of specialty is open to scholars of Latinx Studies broadly defined. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Cultural Studies, Film Studies, Media Studies, the broader field of visual culture or related interdisciplinary fields with a specific focus on Latinx communities and/or transnational contexts. We especially encourage applications from candidates whose areas of expertise focus on Afro Latinx, Central American, Indigenous Latinx, Latinx Inequalities, and Mexican-US Border Studies, among other areas.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D., in hand no later than August 1, 2025, in Spanish, Latinx Studies, Cultural Studies, or a closely related field by the time of appointment. In addition, in accordance with Mellon Foundation guidelines, applicants must have received the Ph.D. no more than four years prior to the start of the position, August 16, 2025.
  • Evidence of a strong research agenda and potential for publication in the field of Latinx cultural studies.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and a commitment to innovative pedagogy.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service.
