Summary: The Modern Languages & Literatures Department at Grand Valley State University invites applications for Assistant Professor of Spanish to begin August 2025. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Spanish or Second Language Acquisition (SLA) with experience teaching Spanish.
Required Qualifications and Education:
- Ph.D. in Spanish or SLA. Current ABD candidates will be considered for a two-year contract with the provision that the Ph.D. must be completed by December 2026.
- Experience teaching Spanish language, familiarity with ACTFL standards, and specialization in Second Language Acquisition or Applied Linguistics.
- Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.
- Potential for successful college-level teaching and active research.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and cultural humility.
- Evidence of one’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. This could be demonstrated by an applicant using inclusive teaching practices; conducting research relating to minoritized populations or social inequality; engaging in community-based outreach to minoritized and underserved communities; or engaging in other kinds of DEI-infused teaching, scholarship, and/or service.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
Experience with PK-12 programs strongly preferred. Background in heritage language pedagogies also desirable.
Responsibilities – Essential Functions:
Successful candidates will contribute actively to the PK-12 World Language Education programs, including observations of student teaching in local schools. They will also teach all levels of Spanish language and linguistics courses. They must demonstrate a balanced commitment to undergraduate teaching, scholarly and professional activity, and service to the department and university.
Tenure-line faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are typically hired on nine-month contracts, with a nine-credit hour teaching load per semester. They are also expected to engage in scholarly/creative activity, service, and a significant focus, which is equivalent to three credit hours of additional responsibilities in teaching, scholarly/creative activity, and/or service depending on the successful candidate's interests and the department’s needs.
Minimum Starting Salary:
$61,056; Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
