Indexer, MLA International Bibliography

The Modern Language Association’s office of bibliographic information services seeks an indexer to index, edit, and proofread materials on Slavic literature for the MLA International Bibliography.

Responsibilities

  • Indexes publications related to Slavic language and literature
  • Assists in maintaining records on periodical coverage and advises the editor of the Directory of Periodicals on Slavic literature and related periodicals
  • Advises the Thesaurus staff on issues related to these subject areas

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Russian literature (or other Slavic literature, but with strong reading knowledge of Russian)
  • Reading knowledge of Russian and at least one other Slavic or non-Slavic language of Eastern Europe
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Organizational acumen
  • Ability to work independently
  • Prior indexing or cataloging experience is a plus, but not required

This is a full-time, mainly remote position, with an in-person attendance requirement at one annual two-day meeting at the MLA's office in downtown Manhattan. You must be able to work legally in the United States. Salary is commensurate with experience, in the range of $52,000-$54,000. The MLA provides generous vacation and sick time, flexible work hours, a 403(b) retirement plan, and individual health and dental plans.
