The Baylor Interdisciplinary Core (BIC) in the Honors College at Baylor University seeks a full-time lecturer to teach undergraduate rhetoric courses in the BIC. The BIC is an honors program that serves as an alternative to a traditional general education core curriculum. It stresses interdisciplinary teaching and research methods and utilizes a primary texts approach to all course curricula. We welcome applications from candidates with any specialization in Rhetoric and Composition/Writing Studies or related discipline, including but not limited to: environmental rhetoric and science writing, indigenous rhetorics, cultural rhetorics, religious rhetorics, political rhetorics, rhetorics of gender, rhetorics of race, material rhetorics, rhetorics of health and medicine, Latinx rhetorics, or visual rhetorics. This position is a renewable, full-time, benefits-eligible, teaching-focused position with a 6-year promotional path to Senior Lecturer for successful candidates and a 12-year promotional path to Teaching Professor for highly successful candidates. Anticipated start date for this position is August 1, 2025.

Essential Functions

Candidates will teach 12 credit hours per semester, or a 4:4 teaching load. Teaching will include two sections of our World of Rhetoric sequence each semester (Rhetoric I in the Fall and Rhetoric II in the Spring). The remainder of the teaching load will consist of two other courses per semester in the BIC curriculum that align with the candidate’s areas of interest. These may include World Cultures, Social World, or Natural World, among others. A full listing of BIC course sequences can be found here. Candidates should demonstrate teaching excellence, expertise in writing pedagogy, and a willingness to serve the program, university, and profession. Experience in interdisciplinary and/or collaborative pedagogy and co- or team-teaching is preferred.

About the Honors College and the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core

The Baylor Honors College is uniquely configured, as it is organized into four units: two majors and two programs. University Scholars and Great Texts are our two majors, and the Honors Program and the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core (BIC) are programs that can be added to almost any major throughout the university. The Honors College is a fully undergraduate unit, and works with students from every part of the university. The BIC is a core-replacement program that has over 550 students and 14 full-time faculty representing a range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. It is built on a cohort model, and students advance through their coursework in a learning community focused on small group discussion and development of critical thinking and writing skills. The BIC is a collaborative and supportive interdisciplinary teaching and research environment.

Qualifications

• PhD in rhetoric and composition/writing studies or related discipline in hand by August 1, 2025.
• Evidence of successful college-level teaching experience in rhetoric and composition/writing studies.
• A record of peer-reviewed publications is desired but not required.

Cover letters should describe candidates’ approach to teaching, research, fit with the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core program, and fit with Baylor’s faith-based Mission. Specifically, candidates should address which courses in the BIC they feel best qualified to teach in addition to both courses in the Rhetoric sequence. Letters of recommendation from three professional references will be requested of selected candidates later in the review process.
