Detailed Job Description
The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures in the College of Liberal Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology seeks applications for a German lecturer position starting in August 2025. Candidates will possess a Ph.D. in German or a related field, along with a minimum of three years of successful college-level German language teaching experience. Exceptional candidates with a master's degree and extensive experience will also be considered. We require native or near-native proficiency in both German and English, as well as a demonstrated capacity to coordinate and develop the German program.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to (1) teaching undergraduate German language courses at all levels, (2) teaching and updating or developing courses in English related to the candidate's field of specialization (3) contributing to interdisciplinary courses and study abroad initiatives within the department, (4) leading the German program through advising students, administering placement exams, supporting part-time faculty, participating in curriculum development, and engaging in extracurricular activities, (5) serving on departmental committees and attending related meetings.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong commitment to growing the German curriculum, advising students pursuing a German immersion or minor, and fostering the prospective development of a German track within the B.S. in Applied Modern Language and Culture. Experience or interest in teaching German for Science and Technology and Professional German is an asset. Near-native proficiency in another modern language is an additional asset for this position. The successful candidate will teach 7 courses per year.

Department/College Description
The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures offers a B.S. in Applied Modern Language and Culture with tracks in Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish, in addition to minors, immersions, and general education courses in German,as well as American Sign Language and Deaf Cultural Studies, Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Latino/Latina/Latin American Studies, Language Science, Russian, and Spanish. The Department houses a Modern Language Technology Center where faculty and students actively integrate technology in language teaching and learning.

The College of Liberal Arts (COLA) is central to the university's ability to provide excellent and well-rounded undergraduate and professionally oriented graduate education. Over the past decade, COLA has grown in research, development of creative new programs, and the recruitment of faculty who are excellent scholars and educators, and the college is poised to be a key player in the university's ambitious plans for new creative programs, research growth, and increased public engagement while continuing to provide students an invaluable grounding in the liberal arts.

The college is home to two schools (Communication and Performing Arts); 9 departments (Criminal Justice, Economics, English, History, Modern Languages and Cultures, Philosophy, Psychology, Public Policy, and Sociology and Anthropology); and several interdisciplinary programs. COLA enrolls nearly 600 undergraduate majors across 16 programs and over 70 graduate students in five master's programs and is responsible for over 20 percent of total credit hours taught and a quarter of the core curriculum classes on campus. Required Minimum Qualifications

 

 

  • Ph.D. in German or a related field. Exceptional candidates with a master's degree and extensive experience will be considered.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in German and English.
  • A minimum of three years of successful college-level German language teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated capacity to coordinate and develop the German program.
  • Proven success in teaching undergraduate German language courses focusing on grammar, language, and culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach courses in English on German literature and culture.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, collaboration, and administrative skills.
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college's continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
