The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) English Department invites applications for the tenure-track position of assistant professor in creative writing. We seek a colleague who is passionate about teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students; has a book published or under contract or a comparable publication record in literary journals, magazines, or other media; a promising publishing agenda; and a commitment to community building. Applicants who can teach in more than one genre of creative writing (e.g, poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction) are especially of interest. An M.F.A. or Ph.D. in creative writing should be in hand by August 2025.

The English department offers two tracks (Communication & Technology and Literature) and an MA in Texts, Technologies, and Literature. The Department’s creative writing curriculum currently includes undergraduate courses in fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry, and we aim to expand this curriculum to support our new Creative Writing Minor, which consists of the foundational course, “Creative Writing Study and Practice”; sequential workshops in various genres; special topics courses; and internships, including with the student literary journal Bartleby. To ensure that our creative writing program continues to provide a welcoming and dynamic outlet for creative expression for our student population, we are looking for candidates with a strong commitment to inclusive excellence. We also seek candidates who will contribute to the overall development of the creative writing curriculum, who are invested in fostering connections with the regional writing community, and who are interested in participating in interdisciplinary initiatives across the University that connect creative writing with other disciplines.

UMBC is a Carnegie Research 1, community-engaged, minority-serving institution focused on inclusive excellence. We are strategically located between Washington D.C. and Baltimore. US News and World Report regularly ranks UMBC in the top 10 most innovative universities, and The Chronicle of HIgher Education recognizes UMBC as one of its “Great Colleges to Work For.” Our campus of almost 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students reflects the wealth of ethnic and cultural diversity in the region. UMBC is especially proud of the diversity of its student body, and we seek to attract an equally diverse applicant pool.

This position comes with a 2/3 teaching load, a salary range of $80,000 - $85,000, and full University benefits. Applicant materials are due by November 22 via Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/156908 and should include the following: a letter of interest; a curriculum vitae; a writing sample(s) of no more than 20 pages; 3 letters of reference; 2 sample teaching materials (e.g., syllabi or assignments); and a separate statement discussing their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education (2-3 pages). Review of applications will begin immediately and initial interviews will be conducted on WebEx. Potential candidates are welcome to contact Dr. Michele Osherow, chair of the search committee, with any questions (mosherow@umbc.edu).
