Position Summary:
The primary responsibility of this position is the leadership and administration of day-to-day operations in the Writing Center. This position assists, directly or indirectly, individual students who use the Writing Center (400+ per semester) and mentors the undergraduate and graduate student tutors who work with them. This position will also teach one English course per annum (3 credits), typically the tutor education course, ENGL 402.
Duties may include:
- Manage day-to-day operations including overseeing the physical Writing Center locations (located in both the Library and the Teaching and Learning Center)
- Manage the Writing Center Budget
- Hire student employees, schedule, approve payroll, and supervise a staff of tutors, at least one graduate writing consultant and one English department TA
- Support undergraduate and graduate student research and community engagement
- Stay current with innovations in the field of writing center pedagogy
- Track student use of the Writing Center and manage data for programmatic assessment
- Serve as a liaison between the Writing Center and the first-year writing program
- Serve on the Rhetoric and Composition and English Executive committees
- Maintain close ties with other student support programs, including Disability Support Services and the Raven Scholars Program, Student Support Services, Academic Coaching, Vandal Tutoring, the College Assistance Migrant Program, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Black and African American Cultural Center and the Native American Student Center
- Foster collaboration between the Writing Center and other university areas, including the Library, Residence Life and Honors Program
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in a relevant discipline such as English, Rhetoric and/or Composition Studies, Creative Writing or Language and Literacy
- Working in a college or university writing center assisting developmental writers
- Working with various backgrounds, including students with unique learning needs
- Implementing best practices in tutoring writing, based on current writing center pedagogy
- Experience with various forms of technology to support writing center operations, such as WCONLINE, word processing software, social media tools, and online conferencing software
- Building relationships with students, staff and faculty
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in a relevant discipline
- Experience managing staff, especially student staff
- Experience as a college-level instructor of undergraduate writing courses
- Previous experience working as an Associate Director or Director of a Writing Center
- Knowledge of co-requisite teaching models
