Position Overview:

Eugene Lang College, the liberal arts college of The New School, seeks to hire a humanities scholar of Theater with deep expertise in African American, Asian American, and/or Latinx theater and a commitment to undergraduate education to fill an Assistant Professor position on a Renewable Term Appointment beginning July 2020. The ideal candidate will have a research and teaching concentration that addresses theater studies through theories and practices of race and ethnicity. We welcome candidates whose work takes a critical and engaged approach to contemporary theater in a global context, connects with social justice issues, and demonstrates expertise in one or more of the following areas: non-white and/or non-western theater traditions; transnationality; diasporic and/or hemispheric contexts and cultures; colonialism, decolonization, and post-colonialism; and networks of global exchange. In addition, we especially welcome candidates who would be interested in developing the Theater program’s links to community-based organizations and who could also contribute to the following minors that are affiliated with the Theater program: Ethnicity and Race, Gender Studies.

Responsibilities: Teach five undergraduate theater courses including one or more foundational courses of the Theater curriculum (for example, Foundations of World Theater and Theater Theory) as well as areas of interest and specialization; advise Theater majors and minors; contribute to Lang College’s Interdisciplinary Arts curriculum shared by Dance, Theater, Music, and Visual Studies in the Department of the Arts. The ideal candidate should also have the requisite experience and interest to eventually serve as the Program Director for the Theater program in the Department of the Arts, supported by a reduced course load, with responsibilities including developing and overseeing the curriculum, advising part-time faculty, working with current and prospective students majoring in or interested in Theater, and attending college Chairs and Directors meetings.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in theater, performance studies, or related fields; recognized scholarly and professional work; demonstrated successful undergraduate teaching experience; ability to contribute to curriculum development for theater studies in a liberal arts environment.
