          The Saint Mary's College Department of English invites applications for a full-time, three-year Visiting Assistant Professor of English (British literature) that has the possibility of transitioning to a tenure-track appointment. Candidates should have a specialty in the literature of the British Isles, post-1700, and scholarly engagement with postcolonial and/or critical race frameworks. Preferred secondary expertise in one of the following areas: Gender and Women’s Studies, Global Studies, Environmental Studies, and/or Digital and Public Humanities. Demonstrated understanding and practice of feminist pedagogy is required. We seek a colleague who shares our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice, and who is eager to join us in building an empowering academic community for undergraduate women.

Teaching, Research and Service Expectations:

  • a 3/3 teaching load that includes: a regular rotation of junior- and senior-level survey and topics courses covering the literature of the British Isles, post-1700; lower-level topics courses in British literature, with a particular eye to raising up historically marginalized voices within our curriculum; regular contributions to Saint Mary's distinctive Writing Across the Curriculum-based first-year Writing Proficiency Program (https://www.saintmarys.edu/departments/administrative-programs/writing-proficiency-program) will be expected; and, after first year of appointment, the possibility to contribute one of the following core courses required for the English literature major: ENLT 385: Critical Theory or ENLT 495: Senior Literature Seminar 

  • an active research and publishing agenda

  • regular attendance at conferences in appropriate professional organizations to present papers, chair sessions, and engage in professional service (annual travel funds provided by the College)

  • participation in English Department and College service activities

Qualifications:


  • Ph.D. in hand, in a relevant field 

  • experience in teaching both first-year writing and sophomore or above British literature courses required; full-time teaching experience strongly preferred

  • interest in contributing to interdisciplinary academic programs highly desired, including, but not limited to: digital and public humanities, environmental studies, gender and women’s studies and/or global studies. Please specify your interdisciplinary areas of interest in your cover letter.

If invited to progress to the next round of consideration, you will be asked to provide: evidence of excellence in teaching (a sample syllabus for a first-year writing course; a sample syllabus for a sophomore-level or above American literature course; one complete set of teaching evaluations from any writing or literature course); three current and confidential letters of recommendation; and a 15- to 25-page sample of scholarly writing. After reviewing these materials, the search committee will select Zoom interviewees, and on the basis of those interviews, invite candidates for campus visits.
