The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Chicago invites applications for a position as Instructional Professor and Coordinator of the Catalan language program. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor, Associate Instructional Professor, or Instructional Professor, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, open-rank, benefits-eligible position, with an expected start date of September 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The initial appointment is for a minimum term of 3 years, with longer term lengths possible depending on the rank offered to the selected candidate. The position is renewable upon successful review.
The Catalan Studies program at the University of Chicago offers 8 different courses in language and culture, with approximately 50 students enrolled every year. The Instructional Professor will be responsible for the curricular oversight and coordination of the Catalan language program in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, and—depending on qualifications and departmental needs—may also teach courses in Spanish or other related areas. We seek a colleague with excellent teaching, communication, and leadership skills who will work collaboratively and effectively with a diverse set of students and colleagues both within and beyond the Department of Romance Languages & Literatures to ensure the ongoing vibrancy and success of our programs.
Responsibilities will include teaching 6 courses per year (distributed in three quarters). The position also includes responsibility for organizing co-curricular and outreach activities. As Coordinator, the successful candidate will assist with all pedagogical, (co)curricular, and administrative aspects of the Catalan Studies Program under the leadership and supervision of the Program Director. All Instructional Professors at the University of Chicago are expected to engage in regular professional development.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements include:
- An advanced degree (MA or PhD) in a field related to Catalan Studies,
- Academic proficiency in Catalan (CEFRL C2, ACTFL Superior, or equivalent), in Spanish or one other language taught in the department (CEFRL C2, ACTFL Superior, or equivalent), and in English (CEFRL C1, ACTFL Advanced High, or equivalent),
- And previous language teaching experience at the college level
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their language proficiency via certification or in the interview process.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Specialized training in second language teaching
- Experience in language course development and curricular implementation
- Experience in coordinating an academic curriculum

- A teaching statement addressing the candidate’s classroom approach and experience teaching diverse groups of students (1 page maximum, in English)
