Tenure Track Position in Russian and Russian Literature

The Russian Department at The University of the South in Sewanee, TN seeks a tenure-track position at one of the nation’s top liberal arts institutions.

Function:
Teaching Russian Language classes on all four undergraduate levels using modern, effective, communicative approaches that focus on language acquisition. Dynamically teaching Russian literature and culture courses in English. Contributing to scholarship and research with peer reviewed publication. Sharing, through committee service, in the governance of the University. Participating in the interdisciplinary academic, service and cultural life of Sewanee.

Course load will be five courses per year (likely one lower level, one upper level Russian course, and one English language literature or culture course per semester).

PhD in hand at the time of appointment is required. The successful candidate will show evidence of: effective classroom teaching; a commitment to scholarly research and publication; a deep knowledge and love of Russian language, culture, and literature; experience living, working, studying in Russia; a desire to interact with Sewanee students, faculty, and community, to work hard to make the classes and programs a vibrant success, and to help create and enjoy a positive, collegial, stimulating work environment.

Also desired are:
Leadership and organizational skills; active experience in the cultural life of a Russian studies program, organizing, participating in, inspiring co-curricular activities; ability and interest in participating in Sewanee’s interdisciplinary team-taught Humanities Program; ability and interest in periodically leading the Sewanee Summer Abroad in Russian trip with Sewanee students; the ability and interest to participate in Women’s and Gender Studies, Film Studies, History of Science, and/or Environmental Studies.
