The Department of English at Skidmore College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English in Fiction Writing. We seek individuals with expertise in the teaching of fiction writing in a workshop environment at introductory and advanced levels. Applicants must demonstrate excellence both in teaching and in fiction writing, as well as a strong commitment to undergraduate education at a liberal arts college. The capacity to also teach poetry or nonfiction writing is highly desired.

The teaching load is 18 credits (typically five courses) per year, including regular participation in Skidmore’s First Year Experience program.  All faculty are expected to participate fully in the life of the college, including advising, faculty governance, and department activities. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching and a strong commitment to undergraduate education at a liberal arts college.

Individuals from underrepresented groups or who have experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. 

Education:  A Ph.D. or M.F.A. is required, and applicants must have at least one book of fiction published or under contract with a nationally recognized press.

Your cover letter should speak to your ability to work effectively with a diverse student population in a creative writing classroom.   

Pay Rate: $75,000 - $85,000

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic discipline (faculty pay ranges reflect 9-month annual salary).
  • Unique applicable skills.
