World Languages and Literatures. Position No. 00700125. The Department of World Languages and Literatures in Dedman College at Southern Methodist University seeks a full-time, non-tenure-track lecturer in Japanese beginning fall semester 2025 on a three-year renewable contract. Normal teaching load is twelve credit hours per semester. We seek innovative and inclusive educators with demonstrated excellence in teaching a variety of language and culture courses at the university level and training in second language acquisition and pedagogy. The lecturer’s primary responsibility will be coordinating the curriculum for and teaching the beginning, intermediate, and advanced sequences of Japanese, as well as serving as the area chair for Japanese. Some additional area chair responsibilities include maintaining and updating existing courses in accordance with the university curriculum, advising students minoring in Japanese, and preparing class schedules. The lecturer will also have the opportunity to collaborate on the Asian Studies Minor program.

The Department of World Languages and Literatures is a dynamic department housing eleven languages and fourteen undergraduate degree programs, and it serves all of SMU's 6000 undergraduates through the university-wide language requirement. The department collaborates with interdisciplinary programs on campus, including International Studies, Human Rights, and Women’s and Gender Studies. Our lecturers organize large-scale events like our International Film Festival; participate in Dedman College Interdisciplinary Institute’s research clusters; take advantage of the opportunity to live on campus in the residential commons as a Faculty-In-Residence; and teach at SMU’s campus in the mountains of Taos, NM. Minimum qualifications: an M.A. or equivalent in Japanese; native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English; training in second language acquisition and pedagogy; and experience teaching Japanese at the university level.

Preferred qualifications: Ph.D.
