The Department of German Studies at Brown University intends to appoint an International Humanities Postdoctoral Research Associate for a duration of two years, beginning July 1, 2025. This position is to be held jointly at the Department of German Studies and the Cogut Institute for the Humanities. We are seeking candidates pursuing innovative and conceptually demanding research in German Film and Media Studies, including German Visual Culture more broadly conceived (such as photography). Special consideration will be given to scholars of German film, media, and visual culture who investigate the theoretical foundations and conceptual presuppositions of their field. We are also open to scholarly approaches informed by what in the German-speaking world is known as Bildwissenschaft.
The successful candidate will teach one course per semester in the Department of German Studies, cross-listed with the Cogut Institute's Humanities course offerings. The fellow also is expected to participate in the Cogut Institute’s weekly Tuesday seminars, as well as other activities. There will be opportunities to connect as well with cross-disciplinary initiatives involving departments and programs such as Comparative Literature; Gender and Sexuality Studies; Humanities; or Modern Culture and Media Studies.
Ph.D. must be in hand by July 1, 2025, or must have been awarded in the last five years. Recipients of a Ph.D. from Brown University are ineligible. Fellows are employed, and compensated, as postdoctoral research associates with standard benefits and in addition receive a $2,000 per-year reimbursable research fund. Scholars from outside the United States are appointed under J-1 visas (exchange visitors status) only.
The Department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
Please submit a letter of application, CV, dissertation abstract, writing sample in English or German (ca. 20 pages), diversity statement, teaching evaluations, and 3 letters of confidential recommendation. Applicants must apply online via Interfolio http://apply.interfolio.com/159697. Applications will be reviewed beginning January 21, 2025 and accepted until the position is filled.
