The Department of English at Gettysburg College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professorship in African American Literature for the 2025-26 academic year, beginning in August 2025. We welcome applications from candidates with innovative approaches to the field and with expertise in any historical period; preference will be given to candidates with the ability to teach courses in pre-1900 African American literature. We are especially interested in candidates committed to diversity and inclusion in their scholarship and teaching and who are invested in doing this work collaboratively with our faculty. Job responsibilities include teaching the equivalent of six courses across two semesters to include lower- and upper-level English literature classes and two sections of first-year writing.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in English or comparable field by time of appointment is required (ABD applicants at time of application will be considered). The successful candidate will be up to date with the state of research in the field, be committed to the teaching of undergraduates, and contribute to the diversity of our curriculum and/or community.
