Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) invites applications for Director, School of Languages and Linguistics at the Associate or Full Professor rank to begin July 1, 2025. We are seeking an administrator with teaching and research expertise in one of the disciplines offered within the school. The School offers instruction in ASL, Chinese, Classics, German, International Studies, Japanese, Linguistics, Spanish, and TESOL. This position is an Administrative/Professional 12-month appointment. Tenure will be housed in the School of Languages and Linguistics.

The target salary offer for this position is $10,000 monthly. Final salary offer will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints.

Examples of Duties

 

The School Director is the chief academic and fiscal officer of the School and has the responsibility for the academic programs and the effectiveness of the teaching, research and service efforts of the School of Languages and Linguistics. The Director is expected to manage and expand the resources of the School and to be the School's advocate both within and external to the University. 

The Director is expected to: 
(1) provide leadership and work with faculty, staff, and students in the School to enhance the existing undergraduate and graduate programs and develop new programs; 
(2) enhance learning outcomes for students enrolled in the School's programs; 
(3) provide leadership in fostering an environment that advances the University's goals regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and intolerance of discrimination; 
(4) increase significantly student enrollment, retention, and academic success; 
(5) enhance the research enterprise and significantly increase research funding; 
(6) increase school productivity; 
(7) develop and administer the school's budget; and 
(8) develop and enhance distance learning programs. 

Additional responsibilities include strategic planning, class scheduling, annual reporting to faculty on the state of the School, faculty and staff workload assignment, and motivation and performance evaluation of the faculty and staff. The Director will also have teaching responsibilities within the School.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in a discipline within the school or a closely related field 

  • Excellent academic leadership qualities and solid academic leadership experience. 

  • Outstanding track record in teaching and scholarly research qualified for being appointed as a tenured associate or full professor at SIU Carbondale.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous administrative experience. 

  • Excellent track record for increasing student retention. 

  • Demonstrated experience in increasing enrollments. 

  • Demonstrated experience with the curriculum in the programs offered within the school. 

  • Teaching, research, and/or leadership experiences that bridge multiple disciplines within the school.
