Oxford College of Emory University invites applications for its 2025-2026 Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship in the Literatures of the Americas.
We seek applications from colleagues whose academic and pedagogical interests focus on the multiple literary, linguistic, and cultural traditions of the United States and the broader Americas. Candidates should demonstrate literary expertise and an interdisciplinary vision of the concept of “the Americas and its literatures.” We particularly welcome specialization in African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies (including non-Spanish literatures), and Native American & Indigenous Studies.
The teaching load is 2/2, with two courses in Fall 2025 and two in Spring 2026. Two of these courses will be literature courses within the area/s of specialization of the fellow, ideally cross-listed between English and other fields, and two courses will be offered in American Studies (for example, AMST 201: “Introduction to American Studies,” a required foundational course for the American Studies/ Interdisciplinary Studies major at Emory College). Courses that could help students fulfill Emory’s Continuing Communication requirement, Race & Ethnicity requirement, and/or Experiential Learning requirement are particularly welcome.
Oxford’s Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship Program
Oxford College strives to become a model of the future of liberal arts education by investing in, advancing, and innovating high-impact teaching practices, redefining the teacher-scholar model, and elevating “beyond the classroom” experiences for our first- and second-year undergraduate students. To achieve our vision to lead the way in best-in-class pedagogical practices, we aim to recruit world-class instructors who are teachers first and committed to academic excellence, compelling pedagogy, and positive social change. The fellowship is a one-year fellowship, renewable annually pending a successful performance review, for up to 3 years total. This opportunity will help prepare postdoctoral fellows for a long-term position at a teaching-focused liberal arts institution. The fellow will receive
-
professional development and mentorship to prepare for a full-time faculty position at a teaching-intensive institution;
-
training in inclusive pedagogy and support for research and grant writing;
-
financial support for scholarly and pedagogical development activities; and
-
opportunities to engage in the academic, social, and cultural life of Oxford College.
The fellow will receive mentorship and guidance in their field(s) and other areas of pedagogy from a primary mentor—a tenured member of the Humanities Division most aligned with the fellow’s academic profile—and from related specialists across campus. Additionally, the Fellow will have access to a network of faculty on the Atlanta (Emory College) campus.
Salary and Benefits
The salary for the postdoctoral teaching fellowship is $60,000. Additionally, Fellows will receive the same benefits that are provided to regular faculty.
Qualifications
Applicants should hold a doctorate in English, American Studies, or a related interdisciplinary field. Candidates who are ABD at the time of application must have finished all the doctoral requirements by August 1st, 2025. Applicants should have some experience teaching undergraduate courses in literature and/or interdisciplinary studies within the fields mentioned above.
Application Instructions
Candidates should submit the following materials via the Interfolio link provided:
-
a Cover Letter addressing the applicant’s ability to deliver courses related to Literatures of the Americas and interdisciplinary studies, preparation for teaching a diverse group of students, scholarly interests, and professional goals beyond the fellowship
-
a C.V.
-
a Teaching Statement describing the candidate’s pedagogical philosophy, teaching methods, teaching strengths and areas for growth (2-3 pages, single spaced)
-
Names and contact information of two potential references. No letters of recommendation are needed in the first stage of the search. Candidates selected for semi-finalist Zoom interviews will be asked to submit two letters, at least one of which should assess their pedagogical profile and potential as a teacher-scholar.
-
Unofficial graduate school transcripts
The committee will begin its review of applications on March 1st but will continue to receive applications until March 15th.
