The Department of English at Bates College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Early Modern Literature to begin July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will teach five courses over the 2025-2026 academic year, including two introductory classes (“Foundations of English Literature” and “Introduction to Early Modern Literature), two 200-level classes (“Topics in Early Modern Literature” and “Shakespeare”), and one 300-level seminar (“Advanced Topics in Early Modern Literature”). REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: PhD is required by the time of appointment, plus a record of research and teaching excellence. Candidates with demonstrated success in working with indigenous, historically underrepresented, first generation to college and other marginalized and vulnerable populations should describe their work in the cover letter.
