Postdoctoral Instructor in the Caltech-Huntington Humanities Collaborations

The Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Research Division of The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens (The Huntington) invite applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Instructorship under their joint research program, the Caltech-Huntington Humanities Collaborations (CHHC). The upcoming theme of the program will be “Interpreting Economic Change in Europe, c. 1650-1900.” We seek applicants whose work engages the social, cultural, and intellectual consequences of economic change in Europe in the long eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

This is an interdisciplinary program. Approaches may range from investigations of specific matters in economic, social, intellectual, or cultural history, to studies of the ways in which the changes of this era were understood and represented by contemporary writers and artists, political figures, scientists, and social scientists. Successful applications may be in the fields of economic and social history (including demography), political history and economic policy, histories of technology and the human sciences, and literary or print cultural studies. Scholars working across the humanities and relevant social sciences are encouraged to apply; interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives are particularly welcome. Please refer to the program description at http://bit.ly/CHHCprogram.

The position begins fall term 2020. Appointment is contingent upon completion of the Ph.D. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct research at The Huntington, teach two (ten-week) undergraduate courses per year at Caltech, and contribute to the intellectual activities of the CHHC program at both institutions. Together with a senior fellow appointed at The Huntington and Caltech faculty, the postdoctoral instructor will help to organize seminars, workshops, and conferences related to the program.

Interested candidates should submit a letter of application, vita, a statement of research interests, a writing sample, and three letters of recommendation to: https://applications.caltech.edu/jobs/chhc or by mail to CHHC Search, Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences, 228-77, Caltech, Pasadena, CA 91125. Application deadline is January 15, 2020.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
