Assistant Professor in History and Theory of Digital Humanities (German)

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies is seeking a candidate for an Assistant Professor (tenure track) position whose work connects European history and theory with the computer- based knowledge and technological cultures of today, both in teaching and research.

Candidates should ideally be able to contribute to the department's strengths in the history of science and technology, media studies, literature, critical theory, philosophy, and art history, by providing a historical and philosophical perspective on the growing field of Digital Humanities. The candidate should have a strong humanist background and expertise in computer science, digital humanities, media art, interface design, creative coding, or project-experience in commensurable fields, and would add both a critical and explorative perspective on social, political, and cultural framings and effects of these technologies. The candidate would participate in a number of already existing and further evolving initiatives in the Digital Humanities at UC Santa Barbara.

Applicants are expected to have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in German and/or Comparative Literature, German and/or European Philosophy or Media Studies, Media Arts, Computer Science, or a commensurable field, except the dissertation (or equivalent) at the time of application. Shortlisted candidates may be asked for available parts of the dissertation; the dissertation is expected to be completed at time of appointment. Native or near-native fluency in German and English are required. Advanced knowledge in computer languages such as C++ or Python, with a possible focus on machine learning, is desirable. The candidate should be able to contribute to existing initiatives such as the Graduate Center for Literary Research, the German track in Comparative Literature, and the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center.

One of the writing samples can optionally also describe or refer to a candidate's digital project(s).
